Lola Carlyle 12Step Romance eBook Danielle YoungeUllman Reviews

Okay so I'm not going to lie when I first picked this book up I read maybe a chapter of it and put it back down and didn't really pick it back up until a few weeks later and I don't know but maybe when I picked it up the first time, I wasn't in the right mindset to read it but the second time around I stuck with it and really enjoyed the hell out of it.

Lola is flawed down to the core and she comes from parents who are very well known in the celebrity world with her dad being some big time producer and her mom a soap opera actress. Anyways her parents are a joke they have issues for days and the dad barely keeps in touch with her, so even though Lola may think she went to check herself into rehab over a made up drinking problem so she can help some long lost friend/crush named Wade she learns that maybe she is exactly where she needs to be not for someone else but for herself.

By the end of the book Lola is not the same girl we met at the beginning she goes through some huge character growth and development. She really went through it in rehab, at first in denial that she should be there and giving the swoon worthy Adam some serious hell, she broke every rule she could but Adam was made for the job and had some serious patience when it came to Lola. Eventually Lola broke down and started doing what was expected of her and that is when you saw her grow as a person.

The romance was really cute and the book definitely had it's funny moments along with touching on the subject of addictions. Overall I really liked it and highly recommend it.
Main character Lola has several problems-her best friend Sydney was sent to rehab, her actor Mom shops compulsively and eats healthly with her female former porn star turned stunt woman; and her Director/Producer Father is simply not there. Add to that mix the fact that Sydney reports that her crush, Wade from the show Drift, is also in rehab. Sydney convinces Lola that rehab is all about getting a great tan and getting in shape ("You could bounce a quarter off my butt cheeks"). So Lola dabs some alcohol on her blouse and behind her ears, pretends she's a binge drinker and voila! is in rehab faster than you know it....

And then the real problems start. She has two strange roommates, Talia, who is addicted and who steals her things, and Jade, who is primarily a mute psychotic drug addict. Yes, Wade is there, and he is a distraction....but so is Adam, her mentor, who is supposed to be guiding her through the rehab process but can't take his eyes (and sometimes his hands) off her. Oh yeah, and there's the different therapies, the make amends quilt group, the individual sessions with Dr. Owen and her bell, and the groups about making collages about addicted pasts with hopes of a better future. Does Lola get out of therapy intact, still not addicted, with her sanity? Does she get Adam? Does she consistently get out of attending AA while in treatment?

I wanted to read this book because of what I do for a living. Being an alcohol and drug counselor is definitely a roller coaster ride, which is what Lola's life seems to be. Full of ups and downs, with a lot of money in between. It was interesting to get a humorous view of therapy-and by the way, the therapies the author describes are very real. This author has done her homework in looking at what type of counseling is done at therapy centers. The rules about contact with others, and the limited contact with family are also accurate. The way the clients/patients are treated at the Sunrise Rehab is realistic and handled appropriately. There is a crisis situation in the book, that is handled in a practical fashion that a lot of therapeutic centers would do if faced with the same situation. This is an author to watch. She is funny, and mostly I liked the characters. Lola was a little hard to take at times, and seemed to lie very easily; but I chalk that up to her age and her debilitating teen angst more than anything else. And the people in the book were not cliches. It was nice to have the Mom be with a female partner. I wish Danielle Younger-Ullman had fleshed out the teenage characters in the book more, as you want to know more about them but are frustrated by your lack of ability to do so. An auspicious debut and I look forward to more by this author.
Unique premise and super fun read.
