When I am mesmerized by a story all the way through reading a book, and thinking mid-reading about the characters and the situations while the book is still sitting on the table next to my bed - of course at that book's end I am going to search out other writing by this same author! First I read THE STORYTELLER - Jodi Picoult's amazingly gripping telling of a young woman baker's discovering her Grandmother's previously untold story of surviving the holocaust. I believed I had read enough about these tortuous experiences of survivors of Nazi Germany's infamy. And yet I unknowingly fell into this book. Picoult's ability to engage me, the reader, with her richly believable characters, her incredibly crafted complex themes, and beyond Hitchcockian surprises along the way, pushed me to immediately come back looking for more. KEEPING FAITH grabbed me next. A longish story about a woman whose unfaithful husband leaves her. I could feel that coming - but then all the rest of what she wrote I couldn't have expected. The family was Jewish, by name rather than practice, and what unfolds centers on her seven year old daughter's relationship with an invisible friend, a female God figure the child could have had no previous knowledge of, her spontaneous ability to heal others, and even bleeding stigmata emerging on her little girl's body. A custody battle ensues which calls upon all of life's most vital issues of integrity, morality, family connection, desires for love. One cannot escape the self reflection and personally coming to terms with one's own beliefs of what is truth. This book deserves ten stars on a scale of one to five, as does the previous read mentioned above. I wonder how it could be I had not heard of Jodi Picoult before. After reading these two volumes, there is much more I will carry with me than just a good story! Dr Robin Bentel

Keeping Faith A Novel PS Jodi Picoult 9780060878061 Books Reviews

The characters in this book are memorable, human with all our failings, selfishness, foibles, and transcendence. No one is all good or all bad, a lovely inspiration that reminds, while entertaining and gripping us with the story, that it's okay to be a complex human being as we all are anyhow.

Faith is a little girl whose mother tries to be a good parent with an interior dialogue that denigrates and berates herself most of the time. She was shattered to find her beloved--nearly worshipped--husband was unfaithful and became depressed. Her husband was able to have her committed in a private hospital. From that time she feared being imperfect, kept distant from her spirited daughter who also worshipped her father while longing for more connection with her mother. When the mother and daughter are shocked by an experience that sends the father away, the two are shaken to the core.

Then the daughter has a religious vision, and no one in the family is religious. A media frenzy, attempts to keep Faith safe, a love affair, a loving Jewish Mother/grandmother willing to do anything for her family are thrown into the mix and the pace of the story becomes breathless. Who is sincere? Who is not? Who is doing what behind the scenes? What is happening to Faith? Books as complex and nuanced as life are gripping and inspiring, stimulating and soothing. This is the whole package.
This was an interesting and entertaining book. Well written and beautifully performed. It's no one of my favorites by this author but I really enjoy how well she researches her subject matter.

In this book, we have a fight for custody of a little girl who, by some standards, could be seen as emotionally disturbed due to traumatic events leading to the breakup of her family.

In the midst of this tale, the author combines mental illness, parental fitness, religious / spiritual beliefs and emotional trauma. Well done! The ending could have been a little less predictable but the overall story was very good!
A wonderful, if somewhat unbelievable, story. The characters of Faith and her mother are beautifully crafted. The trial scene was riveting. The author's attention to the mother-daughter relationship--for better and worse-- is the highlight of the book. I highly recommend it.
Jodi Picoult's books are always a quick read because of the author's skill in using emotional drama for the plot. Having read about 5 of Picoult's books, I can say I am done. I contine to enjoy the author's well researched writing style, but I just will not read anymore of the gender role drivel that is persistent in every Picoult book I have read. This one features a beautiful and emotionally co-dependent mother who actually tried to make a life for herself and her daughter after her divorce. The daughter gets media attention and then the mother takes up with the tv guy sent to report on the story. We are supposed to believe, I think, that this is the course of true love. If the woman is beautiful (and thin; can't be beautiful without being thin) then the very best thing will happen... some rich tv guy will "fall in love" with you. I would have liked this book a lot more of the accusations against the mother of perpetrating Munchausen's were more compelling and evolved into more mature character development of the mother. Instead, she "falls in love" and "gets rescued by some man" and this passes for the happiest of endings. Total, 100% drivel.
I love Picoult's books. I'll start by saying that. I have read several that have stayed with me, which is unusual because I read so many books.

I agree with others who have given this book a five star review and I agree with others who have given it three or less stars. The beliefs of the doctors and the religious characters are all over the place, with no one really landing on anything concrete. It's as if no one in the book has any well-founded beliefs. It's sometimes clear that Faith has caused miracles and sometimes it isn't.

The last few paragraphs did nothing to tie up the story. It was kind of creepy but with no clear resolution. I feel like I missed the point of the way the book ended.

Please read other Picoult books. The 10 or so books I've read by her are much better than this one.
