One of my all time favorite characters has to be Thorn from Linda Joy Singleton's The Seer series. I was very excited to hear that Singleton was giving Thorn her own series! So when Buried came out, I rushed out and purchased it. Buried lives up to my expectations!First off, I love how Thorn, alias Beth Ann, is not the stereotypical hard-core Goth chick which seems to be the norm in some YA fiction. Rather she's multi-layered. For example she loves to play her guitar and also does worry whether or not some of the new church goers will frown on her Gothness and cause her mother to lose her job. She's very loyal to her small circle of friends. She also happens to be a Finder, a person with the psychic ability to find things by touching an object. What's great is she's not always right on her first hunches on things. This kind of reminds me of a teen version of MEDIUM, that it might take Thorn a few times to figure things out.
I liked how the mystery unraveled throughout the story. I was surprised at the ending which is always a plus.
This is a great spin-off for fans of her Seer series. A few of those characters pop into this story too. There's also some new characters: Rune, her Goth friend who has daily weird tales she shares, Amerie, her friend who happens to wear fairy wings, K.C., a boarder who is like a brother to her, and Jay, who at first seems like the typical Prep boy but reveals himself to be much more.
I'm a huge fan of Singleton. Her characters are fleshed out with strengths and vulnerabilities that make them easy to relate with. I'm crossing my fingers that there will be another Goth Girl mystery soon.

Buried A Goth Girl Mystery The Goth Girl Mysteries Linda Joy Singleton Books Reviews
I loved this book. I was happy that this was a continued charracter from the Seer Series. Thorn is a wonderful and strong charracter. I can't wait for the next one. I reccomend this book, I love this author also.
This is a fantastic new book from the author of the SEER series featuring a supporting character in SEER. Non-conformist Thorn is "a finder". I loved the personality of the Goth Girl, who prefers "Thorn" to her real name, Beth Ann Matthews. She has only to touch an object to be psychically connected to a person, place, or event. Thorn has her own problems- her out-of-work dad and large family (count two sisters, young twin brothers, and a teenaged boy, KC, who was living on the streets before the Matthews took him in) had to move to an old farmhouse in the Nevada hills where her mom got a job as a minister in the local church. Thorn has to be true to herself, even though her father is not accepting and she fears that her mother is ashamed of her and may lose her job because of her.
Thorn finds two friends at her new school Rune, another goth girl, and Amerie, a girl who wears fairy wings all the time. While trying to keep a relatively low profile at the new high school, Thorn finds a cheap metal locket on the school stage. The locket won't let her rest until she follows its trail into the hills and finds an unmarked grave- that of a baby. But danger is an ugly threat as she tries to find the locket's owner and link the baby to someone. But does that someone want found? Thorn even joins a talent show, which is not her style, to find the answer.
A side mystery involves the identity of the guy known as the "Grin Reaper" because of the smiley face on his ski mask and because he always leaves a smiley sticker at the scene where someone has been the recipient in his crusade. Robin Hood-style he metes out justice to bullies. Thorn might admire what he does but she can't ignore her first run-in with him and his superior attitude. However, it seems that Thorn and the Grin Reaper are destined for each other. He has his own demons and I would love to see how this pans out, since we were just offered a glimpse into his private life. I'd love to see their relationship grow, too. I loved his character.
So- add quirky Thorn and her two odd friends Rune and Amerie, the honorable (or not?) Grin Reaper, to a high school talent show where a former student who is now a famous rock star has returned and what do you get? The answer- a story that will draw you in and leave you wanting more!
The charismatic characters drew me in and the story line intrigued me from the first page until the end. Thorn certainly is an individual! I highly recommend this book and hope that there will be more stories about Thorn in the future. There is so much potential for an entire series about a "Finder".
